A verandah is a roofing system attached to your house that provides shelter and shade... And endless relaxation and entertainment opportunities.

Style and roof

The style of verandah - or veranda or patio if you prefer - can vary significantly to suit your house, flat or unit. The choice includes flat, skillion, gable, dutch, gable or hip roof style and Outdoor Concepts can help you choose the one that will best fit your house and needs. Outside Concepts also has vast experience in designing and building bullnose verandahs and other curved structures.

You'll be able to view the entire range of roof designs on our Gallery Page.

To support the roof sheeting, generally you require purlins or battens but if you prefer you can choose long spanning roof sheets that can cover several metres without support. However, if you need to walk on your verandah roofing to clean gutters (or perhaps retrieve a ball or kite) a solid framework is a must.

Materials for your verandah

A timber framed verandah has always been the most popular choice and is usually the best option if price is a concern. The natural look of timber fits well with many styles of house, however, you will need to paint or stain the timber every 10 years or so. Steel framed verandahs are becoming increasingly popular. Steel requires little maintenance and is longer-lasting, but choosing steel will add to the cost of your verandah. Aluminium is another popular alternative and has the added advantage of never rusting.

For the roof, traditionally Colorbond steel or tiles are the popular choices and, depending on your style of house, either of these options will suit most home-owners. High quality polycarbonate sheeting is becoming very popular nowadays and for good reason. It is now possible to use solar control type sheets which allow plenty of light in while keeping cool underneath.
