The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is responsible for the National Construction Code (NCC) which comprises the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA). Steel framed carport with bullnose by Outside Concepts Brisbane South

After a referral from a previous customer, this Brisbane carport presented several challenges. The brief was to design a carport that matched the house with a low frontage to minimise the visual impact from the road. Additionally, the existing house had a tiled roof to match and a limited budget.

Meeting the challenge, Lorraine and Tony Reeves from Outside Concepts Brisbane South presented various proposals, starting with a timber frame design and finally progressing to a combination of steel and timber.

This design had several advantages. The Lysaght C-section steel beams allows for greater spans than timber and is cheaper, reducing both the material and labour costs for the customer. Rather than constructing a tiled roof, which is expensive to frame, a Colorbond Custom Orb roof was chosen in a colour to tone with the house roof, gutters, barge boards and trims.

The construction of this double Brisbane carport on the sloping block and working around an established garden at the side provided several challenges for the builder. Curving the rafters to match the house and constructing the bullnose verandah on three sides of this double gable carport were complex components handled with precision by the builder to ensure a quality build. Flashing (or waterproofing) the carport against the house, around fascias and brickwork required the construction crew to work painstakingly. The result is pleasing to all and the customer became Outside Concepts number one fan!

Steel pergola with FlatDek and polycarbonate roof by Outside Concepts Eastern

At this Hope Valley house, Outside Concepts North East constructed a timber-framed carport. It was positioned to extend space over the existing driveway. The gable roof is cut back into the main roof to minimise the need for extra posts and effectively seals the space between the old and new structure. Importantly, it secures the carport visually so it’s seen to extend out from the house, an important aesthetic aspect reinforced by using roof tiles that match those on the main house.

Later, the carport was lined with a ceiling and painted. This provides a finished appearance and makes maintenance easier as the ceiling can be easily wiped free of cobwebs and dust. Gazebo by Outside Concepts Eastern

Here is a real gazebo, fashioned in authentic octagonal style and attached to the house to maximise use and liveability. And the Mt Barker owners love it!

But there’s more to this gazebo than meets the eye. It appeals for several reasons – the width is perfectly proportioned to its height and the spacings between the posts make for generous window openings. The roof is not too pointy so the structure seems to naturally nestle into its location.

Gable roof entertainment area by Outside Concepts Bayside

These clients wanted a new outdoor entertainment area for family and friends. Outside Concepts Bayside designed and delivered a brilliant solution.

The existing dated and rotten pergola was removed and replaced with a timber gable verandah. To maximise the ceiling height the roof was attached to the house using rafter brackets. These brackets connect through the fascia and onto the existing house rafters allowing a post-free beam to support the roof. A box gutter runs between the house and entertainment area keeping your space dry and free of drips.

Next the deck was installed using 140mm Merbua hardwood, each board being individually screwed down to prevent any cupping in the future. Merbau is a deservedly a popular choice in decking timber, offering long lengths, excellent durability, hardness and a brilliant finish once oiled or stained.

To complete the job Pinz Ziptrak blinds were fitted between the equally spaced posts. Neatly tucked beneath the eave of the gable, these blinds protect the verandah from rain on anything but the heaviest of downpours. Cottage entrance by Outside Concepts Bayside

The home owner of this cute little cottage wanted to renovate the main house entry. There was a tight budget and a request to keep it simple!

Outside Concepts Bayside listened and acted accordingly. They built a simple and economical verandah and landing deck with a timber balustrade.

Using treated pine for framing and balustrade is a cost effective decision and one which should provide at least 15 years of satisfactory performance. Having the foresight to roof the landing and deck area guarantee an extended life of the structure as will oiling or painting it. The decking timber is Merbau and is finished in a clear oil.

Gazebo for a tropical garden by Outside Concepts Perth
